Operating Hours, Restricted Travel, and Holiday Restrictions

General Travel Hours

Oversize vehicles can travel during daylight hours, starting one half-hour before sunrise and continuing until one-half hour after sunset, seven days a week. Loads not exceeding 10 feet wide with all other legal dimensions may travel at night on Interstate highways with proper lighting.

Night Travel Exceptions

Daylight hours only except for the following, which must be legal height, properly permitted, signed, and lighted:

  • A single unit alone exceeding 60′ but less than 75′ overall
  • A combination unit less than 100′ overall where the single unit exceeds 60′
  • A load up to 10′ wide on Interstate Highways only

Holiday Restrictions

Holiday travel is usually allowed for loads that do not require escorts. However, ports of entry are not open on holidays, so permits must be pre-ordered if you want to travel on holidays.

Movements requiring escorts are not permitted on the following holidays or holiday weekends:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas

Seasonal Restrictions

There are no specific annual restrictions, but some restrictions may be imposed as necessary during the spring to account for snow and ice thaw conditions.

Signs, Flags, Lights, and Overwidth Load Requirements

Signs, flags, and warning lights are often required when moving oversize freights or superloads for the safety of other vehicles and drivers on the road.

Signs

  • “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs required for all oversize loads
  • Placement: Must display signs on both front and rear of vehicle
  • Dimensions: At least 60 inches wide by 10 inches high
  • Background: Yellow background with black letters
  • Letters: At least 8 inches high and painted in 1-inch wide brush strokes
  • Pilot car signs: If traveling with heavy haul loads, pilot cars must also display bumper or roof-mounted “Oversize Load” signs visible from both front and rear

Flags

  • Fluorescent red safety flags required on any overhang extending beyond any side of the trailer
  • Overhang requirements: If overhang is longer than 4 feet, the end must be flagged during the day or lighted at night

Lights

Lighting Requirements for Oversize Loads Authorized for Nighttime Travel

Over length loads require a red lamp and red reflector on each corner of the load visible from the rear and each side to indicate the maximum overhang.

Overwidth loads require:

  • An amber clearance light on each front corner
  • A red clearance light on each rear corner of the load
  • Must display a revolving amber light, amber strobe light, or two (2) two-way flashing amber lights at least 4″ in diameter on the vehicle, visible to the front and rear
  • Overhang must be illuminated at night if applicable

Escort Vehicle Requirements

When Escorts Are Required

Escorts are required on two-lane primary and secondary highways when:

  • Movement is 110′ or greater in length
  • 14′ or greater in width
  • Will extend to the left of the center line during movement

Escorts are required on Interstate or four-lane divided highways for:

  • Widths of 15′ or greater
  • Escorts for height on all highways and length on Interstate highways are at the discretion of the approving authority
  • Escorts for all highways are required for rear overhang of 25′ or more

Escort Vehicle Equipment

Escort vehicles must be properly equipped and display appropriate “OVERSIZE LOAD” signage and amber warning lights as specified in permit conditions.

Obtaining a Permit

Permit Validity and Extensions

  • Standard validity: Wyoming oversize permits are valid for five days
  • Extensions available: Up to another 120 hours (5 days) may be granted upon showing that weather, road conditions, or mechanical failure prevented completion of the original trip during the initial five-day period
