Summary:
Operating hours for oversize loads in Mississippi are one half-hour after sunrise until one half-hour before sunset, Monday through Saturday. Travel on Sundays is not permitted.
If the load does not exceed 12 feet wide, 13 feet and 6 inches high, 99 feet overall length, 150,000 pounds GVW, and a 4 foot rear overhang, the load is allowed 24-hour movement. However, when the load is over ten feet wide, an escort is required for night travel.
Overwidth loads cannot be moved during inclement weather. Specifically, movement is prohibited anytime there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible persons or vehicles upon the highway at a distance of five hundred feet or when pavement conditions, winds, or other weather conditions constitute hazardous travel.
Movement is not allowed after 12:00 p.m. on days preceding or on the following holidays (unless permitted specifically permitted);
Finally, oversize load movement is prohibited on all posted bridges.
Oversize or Wide Load Signs are required on all loads in excess of twelve feet in width. The sign should measure 84 inches by 18 inches and have the words “OVERSIZE LOAD” or “WIDE LOAD” in black letters 10 inches high with a one-and-five-eight inches brushstroke on a yellow or orange background.
Warning flags that are red and measuring 18 inches square must be displayed on all corners at a height of six feet above the pavement on any transportation in excess of 10 feet, not exceeding 12 feet in width.
Two five-inch flashing amber lights sufficient for 500 feet of visibility should be mounted approximately six feet above the pavement on the rear corners of loads exceeding 12 feet in width.
