Summary:

  • Operating hours for oversize loads in Mississippi are one half-hour after sunrise until one half-hour before sunset, Monday through Saturday.
  • Oversize load movement is not allowed on six major holidays or the day preceding them.
  • Mississippi has posted bridges where all oversize loads are prohibited, which your transportation route needs to consider.

Operating Hours, Restricted Travel, and Holiday Restrictions

Operating hours for oversize loads in Mississippi are one half-hour after sunrise until one half-hour before sunset, Monday through Saturday. Travel on Sundays is not permitted.

If the load does not exceed 12 feet wide, 13 feet and 6 inches high, 99 feet overall length, 150,000 pounds GVW, and a 4 foot rear overhang, the load is allowed 24-hour movement. However, when the load is over ten feet wide, an escort is required for night travel.

Overwidth loads cannot be moved during inclement weather. Specifically, movement is prohibited anytime there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible persons or vehicles upon the highway at a distance of five hundred feet or when pavement conditions, winds, or other weather conditions constitute hazardous travel.

Movement is not allowed after 12:00 p.m. on days preceding or on the following holidays (unless permitted specifically permitted);

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Fourth of July,
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas

Finally, oversize load movement is prohibited on all posted bridges

Signs, Flags, and Lights Requirements

Signs

Oversize or Wide Load Signs are required on all loads in excess of twelve feet in width. The sign should measure 84 inches by 18 inches and have the words “OVERSIZE LOAD” or “WIDE LOAD” in black letters 10 inches high with a one-and-five-eight inches brushstroke on a yellow or orange background.

Flags

Warning flags that are red and measuring 18 inches square must be displayed on all corners at a height of six feet above the pavement on any transportation in excess of 10 feet, not exceeding 12 feet in width.

Lights

Two five-inch flashing amber lights sufficient for 500 feet of visibility should be mounted approximately six feet above the pavement on the rear corners of loads exceeding 12 feet in width.

Obtaining a Permit

Mississippi offers a variety of permits, including:

  • Single Trip Permit: This permit allows a vehicle or load to make a single, one-way trip within the state of Mississippi. It is suitable for occasional or infrequent oversize hauls.
  • Annual Permit: An annual permit is valid for a specified duration, typically one year, allowing the vehicle or load to make multiple trips within the state during that time period. This permit is ideal for frequent oversize haulers who regularly transport loads that exceed standard size and weight limits.
  • Trip and Fuel Permits: Trip and fuel permits may be required for vehicles that are not registered in Mississippi but need to travel through the state or conduct business temporarily. These permits typically cover both oversize and overweight loads and fuel usage.
  • Superload Permit: For exceptionally large or heavy loads that exceed standard oversize limits, a superload permit may be required. Superload permits are issued on a case-by-case basis and involve additional scrutiny and special considerations due to the extreme size or weight of the load.

Permits can be ordered at the Mississippi state website or by calling 1-(888) 737-0061.
