Summary:
In Indiana, oversize travel is not allowed on major holidays and holiday weekends.
Permitted vehicles up to 110 feet in length, 10 feet wide, and 13 feet 6 inches high that are less than 200,000 pounds are allowed to travel continuously on all days at all times.
Any vehicle over 110 feet long, 10 feet to 14 feet 4 inches wide, and no more than 15 feet in height may travel seven days a week from one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset. Vehicles between 14 feet 4 inches and 16 feet wide may travel Monday through Friday, also one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset.
Vehicles over 16 feet wide, 15 feet high, or 200,000 pounds are typically allowed to travel from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm any day, excluding the weekends.
Other provisions may apply. Check with the OSW Transporting website for details.
Signs, flags, and lights may be required when you are transporting oversize loads or super loads in Indiana. These measures help keep things safe for others on the road.
Signs stating “Oversize Load” are required if the load is greater than 10 feet wide, 14 feet 6 inches high, and/or 75 feet long. Regulations state the sign must be at least 18 inches high and between 6 and 8 feet long. In addition, the letters must be black and 12 inches tall, with a 2-inch brush stroke on a yellow background.
If the trip originates outside Indiana, color combinations or wording approved by other states may be permitted.
Two red or orange flags must be placed at the widest extremities of the vehicle or load. Flags must be in good condition, plain with no figures, and must be 18 inches square. They should be placed so that any approaching traffic can see them.
Every oversize and overweight permit load must have a well-displayed, functioning amber light(s) on the tractor that is oscillating, rotating, or flashing. Lights must be placed at the outer edges and be at least 6 feet above the roadway.
Front lights may be mounted on the towing vehicle at the furthest extreme of any safety device but not extend beyond the mirrors. They must be double-faced lamps visible in both the front and rear. Lights must be visible from 500 feet in normal sunlight.
When transporting oversize loads, you must have low-beam headlights on. In addition, mobile homes and sectionalized buildings with widths of 12 feet 4 inches or more must be equipped with four high-intensity, amber flashing lights: two mounted on the front and two mounted on the rear of the combination.
Single trip permits for oversize/overweight vehicles are valid for 15 days.
Quarterly oversize permits are valid for 90 days.
Other permit types include annual oversize, toll road gate annual, LNG/CNG overweight fuel annual, and bulk milk. Special weight. Registration for special-weight vehicles is required.
To obtain a permit, you must set up an OSW Transporting Account at their website or by calling (888) 799-8858.
