Operating Hours, Restricted Travel, and Holiday Restrictions
Oversized vehicles are permitted to operate from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Weekend travel for loads over 10 feet 6 inches wide, 100 feet in length, or 108,000 pounds gross is prohibited. Restrictions may apply on Friday afternoons between July 1st and Labor Day. Loads that are capable of traveling with traffic flow and overweight-only are not restricted to daylight travel.

Vermont tries to avoid issuing permits for loads that do not originate or end in the state. However, if Vermont is the most direct route, permits may be issued. Speeds cannot exceed 45 miles per hour on state highways for loads that exceed 90,000 pounds or 10 feet in width, over 75 feet in length, or if overweight unless otherwise posted.

Travel is prohibited on holidays for loads that exceed 10 feet 6 inches in width, 100 feet in length, or 108,000 pounds gross.
Signs, Flags, and Lights Requirements
For the safety of other drivers on the road, lights, flags, and signs may be required.
Signs
“Oversized Load” signs are required on vehicles that exceed 8 feet 6 inches in width, 13 feet 6 inches in height, and 75 feet in length. The signs must be posted on both the front and rear of the vehicle for any over-dimensional move.

Signs are not required for vehicles that are overweight only.
Flags
Flags that are at least 18-inch squares must be mounted on all corners and extremities that are overwidth and overlength. Overlength loads or rear overhangs that exceed 4 feet, a single flag must be displayed on the end of the overhang if under 2 feet wide, and two flags are required if the overhang is 2 feet wide or more.
Lights
Loads that are at and over 12 feet in width or 80 feet in length need a flashing amber light fixed on the towing vehicle.
Obtaining a permit
Permits issued by Vermont are valid for ten travel days and are required to be obtained before entering the state. You can obtain classifications for permits and the permits themselves by visiting Vermont’s Department of Motor Vehicles: https://dmv.vermont.gov/CVO/permits.
