Summary:
In Delaware, oversize travel is permitted from sunrise to sunset from Monday through Friday. No weekend travel is permitted.
Travel is not allowed on the following holidays:
All movement must stop at noon the day before a holiday and not resume until noon the day afterward.
These restrictions may vary from year to year, so you should verify the details with the Permit Office.
Signs, flags, and lights may be required for oversized or super loads. Companies must follow these guidelines to ensure the safety of others on the road.
“Oversize Load” signs are to be displayed on every vehicle and load that exceeds the legal width, length, or rear overhang in the state of Delaware. The legal length limit is 70 feet, and the maximum overhang shall not exceed 6 feet beyond the rear of the vehicle. The legal width limit is eight feet and six inches.
Warning flags are required for vehicles and loads that exceed legal width of eight feet and six inches. Flags should be displayed at four corners and/or the widest points for widths over 102 feet. Signs and flags must be at the front and the rear at the four corners and/or the widest points of the vehicle.
The flags must be at least 18 inches square and red or orange fluorescent. Make sure that flags are securely fastened to the vehicle or the load by at least one corner of the flag, or they may be securely mounted on a staff.
If the rear overhang exceeds 4 feet and the extreme rear of the load is 2 feet wide or less, one flag is required at the extreme rear of the load.
Load hauling vehicles and escort vehicles shall travel with low-beam headlights on at all times.
While not required in Delaware, load-hauling vehicles may display a flashing 360-degree yellow (amber) light at an elevation above the highest point of the vehicle. A second flashing 360-degree light may be at the rear of the load if the load obstructs the visibility of the 360-degree light on the load-hauling vehicle.
Single trip oversize and overweight permits are valid for five days in Delaware. Other permits include superload permits, annual permits, and multi-trip permits used for cranes, double trailers, or zero-emission buses.
Companies can order permits for overweight/oversize loads by calling (888) 799-8858 or by visiting the Delaware Department of Transportation.
