Operating Hours, Restricted Travel, and Holiday Restrictions
Oversize and over-dimensional loads, including overweight-only loads, cannot travel on weekends. In addition, oversize loads are restricted to travel during daylight hours only, with no movement authorized between 6:30-9 am or 4-6 pm.
Loads wider than 13 feet, six inches, or over 14 feet high may only travel between 9 am and 4 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Furthermore, mobile homes that are 14 feet wide may only travel between 9 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday.
Commercial vehicles are not allowed on Route 15 - Wilbur Cross Parkway. Additionally, I-95 travel is restricted to legal gross weight limits and axle limits between the New York state line and New Haven.
Oversize loads cannot travel on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Signs, Flags, and Lights Requirements
Signs and flags are required in Connecticut for the movement of certain over-dimensional loads. However, light requirements are not specified by state, so Connecticut drivers must adhere to federal guidelines.
Signs
“Oversize Load” signs must be present on any loads over 10 feet wide or 13 feet and six inches high.
Flags
Flags are required for any overhang greater than four feet, and the overhang must be well-lit at night. Flags must be present on all corners of a vehicle with an oversize or overweight load and should be located on the widest points of the load.
Obtaining a permit
Single trip permits are for one use and are valid for three days. Monthly permits are available for divisible loads only, and annual permits are vehicle-specific. These authorizations are issued from the Permit Office, must stay in the vehicle, and accompany the yearly permit.
You can order permits at the Connecticut state website here:
https://portal.ct.gov/DOT/Permits/Permits or by calling the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles at (800) 842-8222.
