Mastering the complexities of North Dakota’s oversize permits and wide & heavy haul logistics is crucial to the success of your transportation logistics. Read on to learn about wide and heavy haul information and North Dakota’s oversize permit requirements.

Operating Hours, Restricted Travel, and Holiday Restrictions

Oversized loads cannot be transported at night before sunrise or after sunset, including on the weekends. Additionally, loads exceeding 16 feet wide and 110 feet long cannot be transported on Saturday afternoon or Sunday.

Loads that are overweight but otherwise are within maximum legal dimensions are not subject to travel restrictions.

Depending on the shipment’s dimensions, travel may be restricted on major holidays or holiday weekends. Touch base with the permit office for the exact dates of restricted travel.

Signs, Flags, and Lights Requirements

Signs, flags, and lights enhance the visibility of a wide and heavy haul, reducing the risk of accidents. They help ensure a safer journey and are required for compliance with North Dakota’s oversize load regulations. Here is what North Dakota requires for signs, flags, and lights:

Signs

Loads that exceed 75 feet in length and/or 8 feet 6 inches in width must display an “Oversize Load” sign on the front and rear. The sign’s size should be 5 feet long by 12 inches high. The lettering should be on a yellow background with black letters that are 8 inches high with a 1-inch brushstroke

Flags

All over-dimensional vehicles and loads should have a minimum of 18-inch square red or bright orange flags displayed on the front and rear of the traffic side.

Lights

Permitted vehicles traveling from 1/2 hour after sunset until 1/2 hour before sunrise need to have SAE-approved Class 1 lights and reflectors. Clearance lights should be visible from the front, rear, and side, marking the outermost portion of the vehicle and load, which extends beyond 8 feet 6 inches. One rotating or two flashing amber lights need to be mounted above the cab, visible at a distance not less than 500 feet.
