Signs, Flags, and Lights Requirements

Signs, flags, and lights may be required when moving oversize loads or superloads for the safety of other drivers and roadway users.

Signs

In Pennsylvania, an “Oversize Load” sign is required on all oversized loads’ front and rear ends unless otherwise specified in the driver’s permit. Once the vehicle is no longer considered oversized, the oversized signage must be removed.

Flags

Oversized loads must have flags at their widest points. In addition, any overhang in the rear that is four feet or more must have a flag or red light mounted on it.

Lights

When a vehicle travels by pilot cars, headlights and rear-end lamps must be on and in use.

All single-trip permits for oversize and overweight loads are valid for seven days. All permits must be in possession before entering the state of Pennsylvania. You can order permits at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation websiteor by calling (717) 412-5300.
