Summary:
In Utah, operation of oversize vehicles is permitted from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, including Saturday and Sunday. In addition, loads that exceed 10 feet in width, the legal height, 92 feet in overall length, and 10 feet of overhang can travel 24/7 on all highways, as long as the proper lighting is used.
Loads that exceed 10 feet in width, 14 feet 6 inches in height, and 105 feet in overall length cannot travel from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday in the following areas:
Oversized or over-dimensional loads are prohibited from traveling on all major holidays and holiday weekends, as well as on Pioneer Day, which is July 24th. Holiday restrictions begin at 2 p.m. the day before the holiday and extend to sunrise the day after the holiday. Prohibited holidays include:
For the safety of other drivers on the roadways, signs, flags, and lights may be required.
Posted signs must be 7 feet by 18 inches, set on a yellow background with 10-inch high black letters in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration Standard Alphabet Series C. Letters must be painted with a 1-5/8 inch stroke, displaying “OVERSIZE LOAD.”
Signs in the front can be fixed to the front bumper or on the top of the vehicle’s cab. Rear signs must be set on the rearmost part of the vehicle or load, and if this is not possible, they should be as far back on the rear of the vehicle cab as possible. The load cannot obstruct the sign. The bottom edge of the sign should be positioned no more than 5 feet above the road, if possible.
Red or orange flags must be affixed on extremities when:
Over-dimensional flagging is not required on LCVs.
Oversize non-divisible load lighting requirements are as follows:
Loads exceeding 92 feet overall length are required to have proper lighting every 25 feet, with amber lights to the front and sides of the load marking extreme width, and red to the rear.
The appropriate permit — in either paper or electronic format — for oversize vehicles and loads must be obtained prior to operating within the State of Utah, except when entering on I-15 (St. George Port of Entry) and West bound I-80 (Echo Port of Entry) and East bound I 80 at (Wendover Port of Entry).
Permits are issued on a single-trip, semi-annual, or annual basis.. Because of additional processing requirements, loads exceeding 17′ 6″ H, 17′ W, or over 300,000 lbs. will only be processed during Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, and may take up to 14 days for approval.
Permits can be obtained online with a major credit card at the Utah Department of Transportation website at https://www.udot.utah.gov/connect/business/permits/commercial-trucking-permits/.
