Summary:
Oversize vehicles can operate one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset in Nevada. The following exceptions also apply:
Loads wider than 12 feet, higher than 15 feet, and longer than 110 feet cannot travel on I-15 between Las Vegas and California state lines or on I-80 between Sparks and California state lines on weekends.
Las Vegas, Reno, and other cities do not have a weekday curfew.
Holiday restrictions apply on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. However, loads that do not exceed 12 feet wide, 15 feet high, or 110 feet long are usually permitted for holiday travel.
There are seasonal weight restrictions on several secondary routes from February through April due to spring thaw.
For the safety of other drivers on the road, flags, lights, and signs may be required on oversized loads in Nevada.
In Nevada, all vehicles that exceed 8 feet 6 inches in width need to display oversized signs on both the front and rear. The signs should have black letters at least 10 inches high and a 1 5/8-inch minimum stroke on a yellow background. The signs must read “OVERSIZE LOAD” or “OVERSIZE” and may be mounted in two pieces if necessary. The signs must be neat, clean, and mounted securely.
Warning flags should be used only during daylight hours. They must be solid red or fluorescent orange with a minimum size distance of 18 inches from one corner to the next. Overhangs that exceed 4 feet need to display a flag. Flags should be placed at the outermost corners and on any protrusions.
Oversized or overweight vehicles must display at least two amber, steady-burning lights on the extreme front of the vehicle. These lights should be plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet. Another amber, steady-burning light must be on each side of the vehicle near the middle. If the rear overhang exceeds four feet, it requires two red, steady-burning lights that identify the width of the overhang and are visible from a distance of at least 500 feet.
Headlights need to be run on low beams for all oversize vehicles.
Drivers must obtain a Nevada Light Permit to have a flashing, revolving amber warning light(s), whether turned off, uncovered, or running. Failure to obtain the permit can result in ticketing.
Oversize permits in Nevada are valid for five days only and must be active when entering the state. You can obtain permits by calling the Permits Office at (800) 552-2127 or visiting the Nevada Vehicle Permits website.
