Operating Hours, Restricted Travel, and Holiday Restrictions
Oversized vehicles are permitted to operate one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour following sunset, including Saturday and Sunday. If the vehicle is only overweight, continuous travel is allowed.
Travel of state highways, except for I-80, is permitted in Lincoln weekdays between 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday after noon. These same restrictions apply to Omaha.
On Saturdays, where there is a home football game for the Cornhuskers, I-80 in the Lincoln area prohibits transit between exits 395 and 409. In addition, the state highway system is closed to oversize travel to allow travel from the Iowa line to Nebraska 14 and from the Kansas line to Nebraska 91.
The permit office in Nebraska is closed on state holidays, which includes Arbor Day. Travel on major holidays and holiday weekends is restricted.
Signs, Flags, and Lights Requirements
To promote the safety of other drivers on the road, lights, signs, and flags may be required on oversize loads.
Signs
In Nebraska, all vehicles that exceed a width of 10 feet require “Oversize Load” signs on both the front and rear of the vehicle.
Flags
A minimum size of 18-inch square flags are required on all four corners of loads that exceed a width of 12 feet. If the rear overhang is over 4 feet, you must display a 12-inch square red flag during daylight hours.
Lights
For loads that exceed an overhang of 4 feet, in addition to the daylight red flags, a steady red light that is visible for a minimum of 200 feet must be used at night. Vehicles that are overlength or have over a 4-foot rear overhang are permitted to run at night as long as a steady red light is present.
Obtaining a permit
In Nebraska, oversize permits are valid for ten days, and you must obtain the permit prior to entering the state. You can obtain permits by calling (402) 471-0034, or by visiting
