Summary:
In Rhode Island, vehicles with oversize or overweight permits are generally allowed to travel during daylight hours from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Night travel is typically prohibited unless specifically permitted under special circumstances. It’s crucial to check the exact hours on your permit. They may vary depending on the load’s size and weight.
To minimize disruptions in heavy traffic areas, oversize loads are restricted from traveling during peak traffic hours, typically from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on weekdays.
Additionally, oversized and overweight vehicles cannot operate during major holidays and the associated travel weekends. This includes, but is not limited to:
The specific restrictions for each holiday period are usually outlined in the permit and may vary depending on the load.
Travel will not be permitted for any instance where the weather or road conditions are considered hazardous.
In the case of large and potentially dangerous loads, signs, flags, and/or lights may be required for the safety of all drivers.
All oversized hauls will require the basic “oversized load” sign in large lettering clearly visible to other drivers. The signs should be on the front and rear of the load and placed on the rooftop of any escort vehicle. The standard size for these signs is 7 feet wide by 18 inches high, with black letters at least 10 inches tall on a yellow background.
Red or fluorescent orange flags, measuring 18 inches square, must be attached to all corners of the load. If the load extends beyond the sides of the vehicle, additional flags must be placed at the widest points to mark the extremities. Generally, anything over 2 feet in width will require a flag placed on either side of the load.
When traveling at night (if permitted) or during low-visibility conditions, vehicles must be equipped with amber lights or rotating beacons to indicate the presence of an oversized load. These lights should be positioned at the front and rear of the vehicle, as well as on any overhanging portions of the load.
For an escort vehicle, a 360-degree flashing or strobe light is required at the top of the vehicle.
Rhode Island oversize permits can be applied for online through the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) website. Alternatively, applications can be submitted via fax or mail. These permits must be used within five days. For more information on obtaining a permit, call the Turnpike and Bridge Authority at 401-423-0800 or 401-462-4368.
