  • Vehicles over ten feet wide, 110 feet long, or 14 feet and six inches high can travel from one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset, including the weekends.

Operating Hours, Restricted Travel, and Holiday Restrictions

Vehicles over 10 feet wide, 110 feet long, or 14 feet and six inches high can travel from one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset, including Saturdays and Sundays on most Idaho routes. Vehicles below those dimensions can travel at all hours of the day with lighting as specified on their permit.

If a vehicle is over 13 feet wide, it cannot move between 6:30 am – 8:30 am, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, and 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm in the following areas:

  • Boise
  • Caldwell
  • Coeur d’Alene
  • Idaho Falls
  • Lewiston
  • Nampa
  • Pocatello
  • Twin Falls
  • Garden City
  • Chubbuck

Holiday travel restrictions may depend on dimension.

Signs, Flags, and Lights Requirements

Signs

Each permit will specify any signage requirements. However, all overwidth loads require an “Oversize Load” sign, while overweight-only loads do not.

Flags

Flags are required on all four corners and extremities of overwidth loads and on rear overhang exceeding four feet. Overweight-only loads do not require flags.

Lights

Lights are required if traveling during the night and will be specified on your permit.

Obtaining a Permit

Idaho issues various types of permits for oversize and overweight vehicles, including:

  • Single Trip Permits: For one-time, one-way trips.
  • Annual Permits: Valid for a specified duration, typically one year, for frequent haulers.
  • Continuous Operation Permits: Available for vehicles that frequently transport oversize or overweight loads within specific parameters.

Permits can be ordered at the Idaho state website or by calling 1-800-662-7133.
